IV, Injection or Capsule? Choosing a Niagen® Format After 50 in South Sarasota

IV, Injection or Capsule? Choosing a Niagen® Format After 50 in South Sarasota

If you're over 50 and live in South Sarasota, you've probably seen Niagen® come up in conversations about healthy aging, maybe at the beach, the gym, or a dinner on Siesta Key. Once people learn what it is, the next question is almost always practical: Should I take a capsule, get an injection, or do an IV? Here's a clear, honest guide to how the formats compare, what the research says, and how to choose.

First, What Niagen® Actually Is

Niagen® is a branded form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a vitamin B3 compound your body converts into NAD+. NAD+ supports cellular energy metabolism, and a study of human skin samples found its levels tend to be lower as people age [1].

Why It's Popular With Adults Over 50

Interest in "healthspan" (staying active and independent longer) is high on the Suncoast. NR is one of the best-studied NAD+ precursors in humans, and clinical trials have found it raises NAD+ levels and is generally well tolerated in middle-aged and older adults [2–4].

What the Research Does (and Doesn't) Show

Oral NR raised NAD+ levels in humans, with larger doses producing larger increases [2,4].

Adults aged 55–79 tolerated six weeks of daily NR well [3].

In older men, NR increased NAD+-related metabolites in muscle and was linked to lower levels of some inflammatory markers [5].

Some outcomes didn't improve, such as insulin sensitivity in men with obesity [6].

Important context: most published human research used oral NR. Studies on IV and injectable NR are more limited, so our team will be upfront about what's known.

Comparing the Three Formats

  • Capsule (oral)

How it's taken: Daily at home. Time commitment: Seconds a day. Absorption: Through the digestive system. Medical oversight: Self-directed. Research base: Most published studies.

  • Injection

How it's taken: Quick in-spa visit. Time commitment: Minutes. Absorption: Bypasses digestion. Medical oversight: Licensed medical team. Research base: Limited.

  • IV infusion

How it's taken: Seated session in our lounge. Time commitment: Longer session. Absorption: Bypasses digestion. Medical oversight: Licensed medical team. Research base: Limited.

How to Choose

  • Want convenience?

    Injections fit a busy week.

  • Want a relaxing reset?

An IV infusion offers time to unwind.

  • Prefer to stay at home?

Talk with your doctor about oral supplements.

  • Want consistency?

Our 4-drip Niagen® infusion packages and injection series help you stay on track.

A Deeper Look at the Research Behind NR

To make an informed choice, it helps to know what each major study actually tested:

  • Trammell et al., 2016 [2]

12 healthy adults took single oral doses of 100, 300, and 1,000 mg; blood NAD+-related compounds rose in a dose-dependent way.

  • Martens et al., 2018 [3]

30 healthy adults aged 55–79 took 1,000 mg/day for six weeks in a crossover trial. NR was well tolerated, and blood-cell NAD+ was about 60% higher than with placebo.

  • Conze et al., 2019 [4]

140 healthy overweight adults took 100, 300, or 1,000 mg/day for eight weeks. Whole-blood NAD+ rose 22%, 51%, and 142%, and side effects were similar to placebo.

  • Elhassan et al., 2019 [5]

12 men aged 70–80 took 1,000 mg/day for 21 days. NR raised NAD+-related compounds in muscle and lowered some circulating inflammatory markers, without changing mitochondrial bioenergetics.

  • Dollerup et al., 2018 [6]

40 men with obesity took 2,000 mg/day for 12 weeks. NR appeared safe but didn't improve insulin sensitivity.

Notice the pattern: every one of these trials used oral NR. That's the most important context when comparing formats, and it's why our medical team is careful not to overstate what's known about IV or injected Niagen.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing a Format

  • How much time do I have?

A capsule takes seconds; an injection takes minutes; an IV infusion takes longer but doubles as downtime.

  • Do I want medical oversight?

In-spa formats come with screening and monitoring by our licensed medical team.

  • How do I feel about needles?

If you'd rather avoid them, talk with your doctor about oral options.

  • What's my budget?

Series packages can make in-spa care more predictable. Ask our team about current pricing and specials.

  • What does my doctor say?

Always loop in your primary care provider, especially if you take medications.
